Delete files securely

Delete files securely in accordance with the DOD 5220.22-M standard. The standard requires at least 3 passes when overwriting the file's data, but we recommend to set only 1 pass to speed up the cleanup process. Even one pass produces good results.

To further increase the security you can enable additional options:

  • Rename folders before deletion - renames the folder 26 times using random names;
  • Reset file size to zero before deletion - setting the file size to zero helps to trick a few data recovery tools;
  • Move files/folders to the specified folder before deletion - moving a file or a folder before deletion will make it impossible for data recovery tools to determine the original location (path) of the file/folder.

The sequence of the secure delete function:

  1. Overwrites the file's data;
  2. Renames the file 26 times;
  3. Moves the file to the specified folder;
  4. Resets the file size to zero;
  5. Deletes the file.

All secure delete options work correctly only on NTFS formatted drives (volumes). File and folder renaming, resetting file size to zero, moving a file/folder before deletion will not always work correctly or will not work at all on FAT32 formatted drives (usually 98/ME systems). Nevertheless, the secure delete function (overwriting the file's data) works correctly on both NTFS and FAT32 drives (volumes).

Please note: enabling each of the secure delete options will slow down the cleanup process. Enable them only when necessary.
